Mazeti Bubinga 7-String Bass

"Thor"

This is the sort of guitar that you have to play to understand. It looks a little intimidating, and there's a reason for that ... it IS intimidating. The fingerboard (fretboard ... whatever) is a HUGE chunk of rosewood. SO wide, like the landing deck of an aircraft carrier, but with 24 nicely finished frets. I'm assuming that this was built in the far east; there are no markings anywhere to indicate where it was built, but I suspect that it might be Vietnamese! Regardless, it is made with an enormous maple and bubinga through-neck with a lovely sculptured neck 'joint' (which isn't a joint at all of course) and maple body wings with thick bubinga body faces (front and back). These are proper chunks of bubinga too, not the skinny laminates that you might expect from some far-eastern stuff. The board is rosewood (and quite nice rosewood too), with tight grain and a good consistent colour. The electronics are all active (9V) and include a 3-band, centre-notched EQ boost / cut, which works very nicely and gives everything from snappy treble to thumping bass. Overall, this is very nicely made, considering its origins. I'm normally openly critical of the build quality of many (not all, of course) guitars that aren't made in England, USA or Japan, but there isn't really a single aspect of the build quality of this guitar that I'm not happy with. I have it tuned (high to low) e - B - G - D - A - E - B, so it can be played as a regularly tuned guitar, albeit a 7-string. Seriously, playing regular guitar tracks on this (or trying to) is an absolute blast ... it's great for strength and stretching training, but even better just to goof around playing lead runs two octaves below where they should be. A great guitar. HOWEVER, this is the most neck-heavy instrument that I've EVER worn. It's worth the bother though.
